OUR STORY
DEFUNCT PUBLIC TOILETS TO QUIRKY SHOP
In 2016 Cornwall Council closed the public toilets at Readymoney Cove in Fowey, Cornwall, along with many other such facilities across Cornwall. Readymoney is popular with locals and visitors alike, as well as attracting passing walkers on both the South West Coastal Path and Saints' Way. I live in Fowey with my husband Andrew, our three boys, two dogs and various other animals.
Having decided to 'retire' from my 15 year career as a solicitor, we relocated to Fowey from Cambridge in 2015 after falling in love with Fowey over the previous decade. We spend a lot of time at Readymoney and a lack of toilet facilities would have been a disaster. I therefore grabbed a chance opportunity to convert part of the existing toilet block into a beach shop, providing a valuable amenity for the beach as well as ensuring the future of free toilets accessible to all those visiting the area. Readymoney Beach Shop opened in May 2017 and has gone from strength to strength ever since, and was described as Cornwall's cutest beach shop by the Cornish Guardian. The shop is open all year round (although opening hours vary in the winter) with at least one public toilet open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Come and see us and say hello!
